Scope of This Book

This is a book about firearms which use burning propellant (i.e., gunpowder or smokeless powder) to propel a solid projectile (i.e., a bullet). This book does not discuss laws on BB guns, air pistols, CO2 guns, spring guns, or tasers. This book is about “small arms” and does not discuss large bore cannon, howitzers, etc.

This book focuses on North Carolina statutes and caselaw concerning firearms. The relevant text of every known North Carolina firearms statute is stated, along with applicable court cases to illustrate and explain the statute. The statutes are paraphrased into readable plain English.

A comments section is included for almost every statute. Issues, history, or observations  about most statutes are discussed. Commentary tends to bring the text of statutes alive, and to better relate the statute to the average reader of this book.

This book goes beyond the statutes and caselaw. Additionally, the common law, the law of torts, and State Constitutional law regarding firearms are also discussed in detail.

Many other States and jurisdictions have all types of firearms laws. This book discusses many laws which North Carolina does not have, to better educate readers of this book  about laws which do not apply in North Carolina. This book also discusses various urban legends about firearms and concealed weapons carry, and their basis in law (if any).

This book explains in detail many technical terms and concepts. It is important to know technical terms to understand firearms in general, and firearms law in particular. This book also thoroughly describes firearm types, cartridges, and bullets.

Several subjects have been centralized for quick reference, such as:

                - How To Improve Your Chances in Court After a Shooting
